Hello people ,

although i am for quite some time in the domain business i have never really focused on the Geo section and type of names
I do own a couple of names and i would really appreciate if someone could give me some advice
I own as you call it a "hack" geo name of a US City and this is "VirginiaBeach "  the hack is VirginiaBea.ch
From your experience how much would the value be of this domain ?

Besides that i own a hack of a major US state , which i dont want to reveal in here , would a major us state hack like for example Nebras.ka if it was available have any value right now ? would someone be interested in it ?

Secondly i would like to ask what the value of a major city of Canada would be ? in the same type , by that i mean a hack

Thank you in advance

Regards

Jim

p.s as you can see i am new at this forum and i hope to learn something here  Grin

I'm sorry to say that hacks really kill the value of the domain. From a marketing standpoint, hacks are very difficult to brand. Yes, del.icio.us has developed on a hack, but that is the exception - not the rule. I doubt your hack is worth more than $XX to low $XXX. Most mainstream businesses are never going to buy a hack. That leaves the value in the hands of domainers. Most high net worth domainers won't touch a hack unless they get alot of direct navigation traffic. That leaves the value in speculators willing to develop a hack ad brand in the local market vs paying high dollar for a non hack or alternative domain. Either way, you are talking about a domain whose primary attraction is bargin hunters looking to get a domain at low cost. Then they will need to spend the money or the sweat equity branding that domain, building quality content, etc (building the real value for that enterprise).

I own VirginiaBeach.tv. I would rather build out that domain than a hack. I was able to buy VirginiaBeach.TV for $500. Sorry.

Hey , thanks for sharing your thoughts i really appreciate it
I must say you have a point here , but how about the USA states Geo hacks which sold for lots of money ? would a US state have value ? i believe owning a state name even in a hack is of some value dont you ?

please let me know what you think

I think hacks might have some value inside the domain community. I believe that has more to do with novelity than practicality. As an end user, a person building out my domains - I would never buy a hack. If you are going to sell I would focus my sales effort on domainers who like hacks - vs a general campaign to find end users to purchase the domain.
