First, thanks for this category.

Second, I bought my first IDN name yesterday, hand regged at dynadot

Cárdenas.com xn--crdenas-hwa.com which is just outside of the #1 tourist destination in Cuba, Varadero.

Does anyone have any stats as to the amount of type ins of an IDN vs. non-IDN? If Cardenas.com gets (for example) 100 unique visitors per month, how many can I expect at Cárdenas.com?

Just try to imagine the average internet surfer who is writing the name. How many of them do you think would use the accent?

I'm not a Spanish speaker, so I can't evaluate the degree of laziness (propensity to drop the accent) among the population at large. For languages like German, the umlauts are never dropped because it changes the actual meaning of the word (wordspace collisions). I think this is not the case in Spanish.

I agree, that's why I haven't been chasing IDN but they speak Spanish in Spain, Mexico, Cuba and in Latin America so I figured it was worth the $9 investment.

Most Spanish words do not change their meaning because of a dropped accent or tilde except "año" means year and "ano" means asshole.  Shocked
