I just let expire a set of all 50 statenames + "mortgagebrokers.us" (alabamamortgagebrokers.us, alaskamortgagebrokers.us, etc.)

I didn't develop last year but waited all year to see if any traffic. You'll see the results of that in early March as they are deleted.

Anybody think I made a mistake??

mdw

all you should have done is build a couple of sites with red and blue background to go with the theme .us.
and you would have seen some traffic comming into those names.

the  .us name if done right will start to earn you money if you develop.
most domainers dont relize that Google does not reconise a parked page as a website.
the system for parking is flawed.

Thanks domainscot, yes I probably should have put up simple pages with adsense and let them get indexed.

Easy to decide to drop though, as I have so many other pots on the fire, and the US mortgage industry is not what it was a few years ago. Anyway if anyone cares, look for them to delete in March.

You could bulk sell them too.

mdw,

I'm curious was there any type-in traffic at all? To even take it up a level I wonder how the State.us names themselves would do with type-in traffic, anyone have one of these or have an idea of the # type-ins they receive? .us is an interesting extension, I don't own any but I could see them gaining popularity at some point.

Not really any type-in traffic to speak of. That's not why I got them of course, but my backlog does not allow me the opportunity to develop them in the foreseeable future, so on the basis of the lack of type-in traffic I let them go.

They averaged just under one hit from direct type-in per YEAR per domain. And most of that was from the best ones. Obviously I kept them as a set, even after letting some slightly better ones go earlier, because I believed they had potential as a complete set of 50. I had some minor non-GEO names to go with them, like mortgagecalculator and such.

At the end of the day, it does not pay to keep lots of domains around that NEED development when you know for sure you WON'T be developing them. <opinion>And .US domains still do need development</opinion> So that's why a meager $375/year or so carrying cost was enough to convince me to drop.
